Ronny Chieng
Ronny Xin Yi
Chieng, born on 21 November, 1985 in Malaysia is an actor and comedian. Chieng
is currently a senior reporter on The Daily Show on Comedy Central and creator
and star of the sitcom Ronny Chieng International Student which premiered on
ABC (Australia) as well as Comedy Central Asia in 2017. Chieng was born in
Johor Bahru, Malaysia, to a Malaysian Chinese family. Chieng was educated in
Singapore and the United States. He lived in Manchester, New Hampshire, from
1989 to 1994. Chieng performed alongside Trevor Noah at a Melbourne comedy
festival in 2013. Chieng was then invited to audition for the position of
correspondent on Noah's Daily Show two years later. He was named among the top
10 comics to watch by Variety in July 2016. In October of 2016, Chieng appeared
as a guest on The Daily Show to discuss his response to an interview with Jesse
Watts on a Fox News segment that many believed was racist. Chieng made
expletive-laden comments about the segment from conservative network Fox News.
He also revisited the city's Chinatown and Chinatown, where Watters had mocked
residents, and conducted more respectful interviews in Mandarin and Cantonese.
The viral video garnered attention in Slate as well as the Washington Post. In
his early years, Chieng was an Singapore Sea Scout. Chieng hasn't managed to
obtain citizenship or permanent residency in Australia despite living in
Australia for ten years. Chieng made a joke about being negative towards dogs
during the 2018 Daily Show. But, he later stated that he's "100% not
afraid of dogs" in an interview.
