Abi Clarke
In the olden
days, i.e. early 2020, comedians might have expected to spend years gigging up
and down the UK as stand-ups before being invited to join a television panel
show and selling out an arena tour. However, that's not straightforward at the
moment. Comedy is a form of art that can to continue to be performed in front
of an audience in person. But, we're not going to see arena tours anytime very
soon. One comedian from Bristol has managed to connect with a global audience
with the help of social media lockdown. Being famous on the internet is not
something Abi Clarke wanted to achieve. The 24-year old, living in Hen bury
with her parents, first started making videos online "to build a following
of like-minded individuals who would like my stand-up comedy. "I was
performing a lot of shows in the depths of Devon for men of 50 and older who
were not so keen on my Love Island, Sims and Twilight references, so I decided
to go online with the intention of meeting other young women who were able to
relate to me." Abi has since performed at Lakota Gardens since locks have
eased but she still posts her videos on Instagram, Twitter and Tik Tok (where
she's recently surpassed more than 500,000 followers) Finding ideas from sources
as diverse as her job in a cafe, a conversation with a stranger or the girls'
group chat. She also writes every thought down on her phone.
