Maureen O'Hara

Maureen O'Hara (born Maureen FitzSimons 17 August 1920 24 October 2015 -) was an Irish actress and singer, who achieved success in Hollywood through the 1940s and into the  60s. Naturally redheaded, she was well-known as a shrewd and empathetic heroine. She often appeared in Westerns or adventure films. Charles Laughton was the first to see her potential as a star and introduced her to Hollywood. She was also a frequent collaborator with John Ford and John Wayne, a longtime friend and director. O'Hara was born in Dublin, Ireland by a Catholic family. She was determined to be an actor from a young age. She studied with the Rathmines Theatre Company from the age of 10 and was at the Abbey Theatre from the age of 14. After the screen test, she was rejected. However, Charles Laughton recognized her potential and offered to have her star in Alfred Hitchcock’s Jamaica Inn in 1939. She relocated to Hollywood the following year to be a part of his in the production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and was given an acting contract by RKO Pictures. In the years following, she enjoyed an extensive and lucrative career. She was referred to as "the Queen of Technicolor". Her movies include How Green Was My Valley (1941) and her first film with John Ford, The Black Swan (1942), The Spanish Main (1945), Sinbad the Sailor (47) and the Christmas classic Miracle on 34th Street (1947), and Comanche Territory (1950). O'Hara filmed her first film alongside John Wayne, the actor who she is closely connected in Rio Grande (1950). The Quiet Man (1952), The Wings of Eagles(57), McLintock were the subsequent films. (1963), Big Jake (1971). Wayne was so adroit at chemistry with O'Hara that some believed they were in a marriage. O'Hara was more motherly as she grew older, appearing in films like The Deadly Companions (1961), The Parent Trap(61) and The Rare Breed (1966). In 1971, she retired from the film industry. However she returned to the industry twenty years later to appear alongside John Candy in Only the Lonely (1991).
